Imagine delaying or canceling a tour just because you packed too much! I know that would be the worst feeling ever.

So before you pack, make sure you know what you are doing. If you have access to baggage, you will have to pay the penalty for the extra amount. How much? I will discuss that later in this article.

How Much Weight Am I Allowed  Carrying?

How Much Weight Am I Allowed Carrying

There is a strict rule about how much weight a person can carry while traveling. If you are already a frequent traveler, you may already know about this stuff.

But if you are not, I have gathered some info about it. According to IATA (International Air Traffic Association), the recommended size is 32kg.

This limit of how much a person can carry varies from country to country. Let’s see the limit for some popular international airlines.

United Airlines22.6 kg
Air Canada23 kg
Emirates30kg
Qatar30kg
Singapore Airlines2x23kg or 30kg
Finnair20kg
South African Airways20kg
Norwegian Airlines2x20kg
Air France20kg

So, you can get the idea from the chart. But it is best to know the weight limit of the particular airline or flight before you start packing.

Again, this limit can vary based on the flight. For example, some airlines have different limits for transatlantic flights.

It can also vary concerning which class you are traveling in. For example, if you are traveling in business class, you may get an incentive there.

If you are carrying any liquid substance, it should not be more than 100ml. It is because it includes jelly-like substances too.

If all these seem complicated to you, just go to the airline’s website. You will get all the information you need.

The Penalty Of Not Knowing The Weight!

Getting a penalty for carrying extra weight and having to throw out your essential stuff at the airport is the worst beginning of a tour.

But that is not the only thing you have to deal with, and most airlines charge extra cash for carrying extra baggage. It can cost you over 50 bucks.

It also varies depending on the flight being domestic or international. So it is always better to be safe than sorry.

How Do I Measure the Weight Of My Luggage?

When we start packing, it is hard to estimate the weight if you do not have any previous experience. Suppose you have a manageable scale. But if you don’t, here are some methods you can use.

Method 1 – Compare With Something Available

Compare With Something Available

If you don’t have a scale, you must have something available to know the weight. For example, a bag of rice or wheat.

Take those in one hand and your stuff that you want to measure in another hand and compare them.

If you do not have bigger scales, then you can use kitchen scales and add smaller weights.

If you do not have anything you can measure with, maybe you have a kid you know the weight of.

I know that sounds crazy, but you can try. I know the measurement will not be near perfect. But you will get a gross idea.

Method 2 – Find a Scale

Find a Scale

There are places nearby where you can find a large size scale to measure your luggage weight. Let’s talk about them first.

  1. Grocery store or Supermarket: No matter where you live, you will find one!
  2. Gym: Go to your nearby gym. They always have the scale to measure weight.
  3. Post office: Post offices have big scales. As they work with couriers all the time.
  4. Junkyard: Another place to find big scales. The scales you will find there will be of the industrial size.
  5. Hospital: You can go to the nearby hospital. Though I won’t suggest that.
  6. Travel agency: If you are getting help from a travel agency, they will indeed have a scale. So use that.

You can find large scales to weigh your luggage. But if you do not feel like going to these places just to weigh something. You can make a scale yourself.

Method 3 – Make a Scale from Scratch

Making a makeshift scale from scratch is not that big of a deal. You can make one from the things available at home.

Step 1 – You need a fulcrum to set it up. Then, you can use a can for it.

Step 2- You need a wooden plank. Put the wooden plank on the fulcrum. It should be several inches wide.

Step 3 – Now on one side of the plank, put an ideal weight. Let it be 10kg. Now on the other side, put your stuff.

Step 4 – Then decide which side is heavier by looking at them. The heavier part will be lower than the lighter part.

It is a straightforward way to weigh, and you just need a wooden plank and a can.

Method 4 – Buy a Scale

Buy a Scale

If all of these easy methods seem too much work to you, you can always buy a scale from amazon or your local hardware store. However, if you are going to fly frequently, buying one scale will help you.

Flying is always a remarkable experience for humans. To make your journey more cheerful, make sure you make the right decisions while packing the right things in the right amount.
