European Commission Safe Driving Regulations
As of the 16th October 2016, European Union countries have adopted new rules governing how long drivers can stay in any given time. In other words, the “driving hours” theoretically are limited to a maximum distance of 1260 miles a day without making an accompanying break throughout these 24 non-consecutive hours.
In Europe it is now prohibited that trucks or buses remain continuously on highways for longer than 15 minutes. Over 20 countries’ driving regulations specify that drivers should take a minimum of 10 hours off and not more than 12.
How Many Hours Is Safe to Drive in One Day?
In Europe, the law states that drivers cannot drive continuously for over 12 hours. It also includes a ten-hour minimum break in between driving days.
However, different countries have varying rules on the time necessary to take breaks and how many additional hours of rest are allowed during a 24-hour period.
In the U.S., there is no restriction on how long drivers can drive in a day, with one exception- vehicles used to transport hazardous materials are “not permitted to operate more than 12 hours without an intervening rest period.”*
How Many Miles Can You Drive in A Day?
You could theoretically drive 1260 miles in one day, if you drove non-stop.
In Europe, the driving rules state that you can drive no more than 1260 miles in one day.
Maybe we will see a newer and better law soon concerning how many hours is safe to drive with breaks included in general.
What And When Do You Take a Break
A break is any temporary halt from the driving task by a driver or a combination of drivers, including other than those periods designated in this Regulation one days per passenger and on average more than 10 hours apart over equivalent sections of uninterrupted driving duty without breaks during 24 consecutive hours for drivers with no passengers which cannot be fully eliminated:
(a) in exemptions;
(b) according to type-time principle;
(c) when the requirement of driving is suspended by one of a risk-based four categories. The driver or drivers must stop their vehicle, switch off the engine, close to all local traffic in accordance with Directive 561/2006/EC and not resume his duty until he has complied with the applicable provisions described in points 2, 3 and 4 aforesaid*
Driving for more than 12 hours without a break can have serious health impacts.
How Far It’s Safe To Drive If You’re Travelling Alone
The Ministry of Transport governs the rules in following section 55-10 “No individual is permitted to drive more than 10 hours continuously without a break at least every 24 hours provided that no more than 75% driving duty per day may be performed by one driver.”
“55.06 No individual is permitted to drive for more:
(a) More than 12 consecutive hours, with one exception- vehicles used to transport hazardous materials are not
calculated in this rule;
(b) More than 15 hours continuously, with one exception- vehicles used to transport hazardous materials are not calculated in this rule.”
Even if you have another driver that’ll be driving any time, you’re stopped for a break your 10-hour limit will still only last 24 hours. Another thing worth noting is that when it comes to sudden situations such as accidents or mechanical failure those limits of 12 and 15 actually go up to 16 and 18.
How Far It’s Safe To Drive If You’re Travelling With Someone Else
The rules in this section state that no individual is permitted to drive more than 10 hours continuously without a break at least every 24 hours provided that no more time driving duty of 80% or over can be performed by one driver, with the exception which contains hazardous materials vehicles are not calculated above.” “55-8 No vehicle stopped in excess
of 15 minutes may deviate more than 30 meters from the center of the road or driveway, except:
(a) In an emergency when to do so is necessary either to avoid injury or damage and
(b) When directed by a peace officer.” As soon as someone else joins you up they’ll be bound by this limit.
How Many Miles is a Truck Driver Allowed to Drive in One Day
The rule provides that no individual is permitted to drive more than 12 hours at a time, with one exception which notes the requirement for hazardous materials vehicles. If you’re exceeding this drive limit to the point of mechanical failure then a road agent and an inspector can pull over your truck for inspection.
“55-4 No person is permitted to drive, and no vehicle shall be driven on any highway or other work place area at more than:
(a) 14 hours working days, with one exception which notes that trucks used in offloading loading materials are not calculated above; or
(b) 24 hours working days, with the exception that hazardous materials vehicles are not calculated above.” You don’t accumulate driving time based on consecutive highway miles or by expenditure during a day.
