If you have clicked on this article surely you are searching for information about the luggage compartment of an airplane.
Do not worry, you are at the right place. Here I am going to explain everything you need to know about the airplane luggage compartment.
What is the “Airplane Luggage Compartment”?
Airplanes allow passengers to carry a certain amount of baggage with them while traveling.
To carry these bags and other things they have a container or compartment that is called an airplane luggage compartment. This is also called hand luggage, cabin luggage, carry on etc.
Though most of your heavy baggage is going to cargo, you are allowed to carry your essential and valuable things with you.
But there is a limit to how much can be carried on hand while traveling. This limit varies from airline to airline.
Where Is It In The Plane?
There are overhead luggage compartments in most planes so that you can easily access it. However, it can defer according to the size of the plane.
For example, there are narrow aircrafts such as Boeing 373, Airbus 320 where they allow passengers to carry the luggage in a cargo compartment below the sitting arrangement and in this way they make sure there is no movement during the flight.
In commercial airlines, it is one of the most discussed issues. As many customers want their belongings to be carried by hand.
As carrying by hand is safer and there is low risk of damage, passengers prefer to carry their important things with them.
But this can also cause a hazard. When there is an emergency, the plane needs to be evacuated. Then many passengers tend to waste time carrying their belongings with them. These can cause you more harm than you can think of.
What Is The Size Of The Luggage Compartment?
It can also vary from plane to plane. But there are some worldwide standards.
According to the guidelines of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) airlines have to maintain some standards.
For example, a cabin bag can be a maximum 56cm long and 25cm wide. This measurement includes the handle, pockets etc.
Again the size of the compartments differ according to which class you are booking. In business class you get a more spacious compartment than in economy class.
Here I am mentioning some allowed sizes of different airlines from their websites.
In Japan airlines the dimension of the luggage compartment is 45cm x 35cm x 20 cm. In American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines the size is 56cm x 36cm x 23cm.
So you get the idea!
What Can I Carry?
There are some rules and regulations of what kind of thing you can carry in a flight, or what you can put there in the storage compartment. These rules vary from country to country. I am listing some common rules here.
- Maximum 100 ml or 3.4 ounces of containers of liquid or gel. That includes the toiletries or any medicines you want to carry. So use it wisely. Try to use travel size.
- Use clear containers or zip-lock plastic bags.
- Aerosols, jellies, liquid eyeliners, lipsticks are also liquid. So, do not forget that while packing.
- There are some restraints that you should remember. Like you cannot carry inflammable or toxic chemicals or liquids that can cause an accident. For example, you can bring lighters, but there should not be any fuel.
- Do not carry any sharp or pointy things like razors, knives or scissors. If you must carry a scissor, make sure it is less than 4 inches. Metal knives or Swiss army knives are strictly restricted.
For more information you can check the United States Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) guideline.
Are Luggage Compartments Of An Airplane Temperature Controlled And Pressurized?
Yes, they are pressurized. But not always temperature controlled.
Why Do Airlines Allow Two 23kg Bags But Not One 46kg Bag?
These things are done manually. In many countries, you cannot carry over 25kg of weight per person.
According to many the reason is, suppose the plane crashes and they can only save 25kg bags with their existing equipment, then how will they rescue your 46kg bag?
What Happens To The Luggage If The Plane Crashes?
The airlines are responsible for the baggage it carries. So they will return the bags if they can retrieve them after the crash.
But if they cannot, they will have to compensate for the amount they have lost.
Can Anyone Survive In An Airplane Luggage Compartment?
It depends on some factors like if the compartment is temperature controlled or not. And of course, the air pressure also matters.
If the compartment is not pressurized and the plane flies too high, the person in the compartment is definitely going to die.
However, no matter which plane you are travelling, it is always a good idea to make an estimation of how much loading space you are going to have. That way you will not get into any trouble because of carrying any extra weight.
